High turnover rate in this unit is one of her major concerns because it will directly lead to quality care of patients. Also, new hired nurses will cause higher cost of unit due to long term training. Ms.

J works with charge nurses and educator to improve financial status and patients care. Differences between leadership and management Leadership and management are often used interchangeably and they do have some overlapping concepts like involving influencing constituents or employees, but these are two distinct ideas. According to Huber(201 0), management is defined as the process of coordination and integration of resources through activities of planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and controlling to accomplish specific institutional goals and objectives.

On the other hand, leadership is defined as the process of influencing people to accomplish goals and it related to influence, communication, group process, goal attainment, ND motivation. Management is often more task-oriented, while leadership is often considered more inspirational and visionary (Rickets, 2010). Leadership and management must work together to achieve the unit goal and maintain successful organization. Primary Leadership Style There are many different leadership styles present in the healthcare setting today.

In Ms. Jus case, her leadership style characteristics can be described as Laissez-Fairer. Laissez-fairer comes from the French phrase and it means “leave it be. ” According to Clark (2008), leaders with this type of leadership are minimally involved in decision making. This style works best when people are capable and motivated to decide and not hindered by central coordinators. Ms. J is the manager of one of the busiest transplant unit in the nation and she is proud of having skilled and trustworthy staff members.

Most times, critical decisions are made among staff members or between staff member and charge nurse in this unit. However, staff members often complain about Ms. Jus leadership style because they believe her minimum involvement occurs from insufficient knowledge of the units and patients. She does provide feedback to staff members, but it is limited to evaluation period. Ms. J trusts her team members and leaves team members to work on their own. In this unit, shift charge nurses and educator communicate with each team member on regular basis and they give feedback to Ms.

J every day. Ms. J is more involved in education of nurse clinician, educator, and charge nurses. This style of leadership can be somewhat effective in this unit because this unit has strong leaders who are in charge of each shift and too many leaders could give staff members multiple direction and cause higher stress level in work environment. Collaboration and interdisciplinary Nursing Practice Collaboration and active interdisciplinary nursing practice among health care team are crucial.

Institute of Medicine (MM) emphasized being a full partnership within healthcare team will help identifying problems, implementing plans, tracking improvement, and establishing the goals. The leaders who encourage active engagement among team members will promote safer patients care and successful team environment. Collaboration will also contribute to reduced lengths of hospital stay, cost savings, increased job satisfaction and retention among nurses, and improved teamwork (MM, 2010). Ms.

J communicates with employees through various meetings and employee evaluations. She spends enough time with staff member during evaluation and she also encourages them to talk about problems of the unit and personal problems. However, staff members state that evaluation doesn’t occur often and they often complain about lack of communication with Ms. J. Ms. J spends her most time with other department managers and quality care team to improve current issues and she delivers messages to shift charge nurses in the unit.

Ms. J demonstrates collaboration by sharing responsibilities for different collaborative work with charge nurses, educators, and nurse clinicians. In this unit, Ms. J trusts her team and she communicates with charge nurses about her staff members and patients. However, improving collaboration between Ms. J and the entire group could lead to greater success in this unit. Leadership Role of Professional Nurse In broad term, leadership role in nursing profession is managing people and organization.

It includes business, clinical, personnel functions, and career development as well as staff support. In one study, 84% of nurses had considered leaving their jobs because of dissatisfaction with their direct managers (Schoenberg& Kramer, 2009). This survey shows how role unction of leadership can influence staff members’ satisfaction in their work environment. Effective leadership role is assisting staff members to adapt in a complex and chaotic environment and managing the unit efficiently.

There will be a need for leaders’ critical thinking, clear communication skill, problem-solving skill, and evidence based knowledge. It is important to demonstrate these skills to accomplish the goal of units and get support from staff members. It will facilitate a higher quality of care and the best patient outcomes. Leadership can also arise from any members in group and it is an important issue related to how urges integrate the various elements of nursing practice to ensure the highest quality of care for patients (Huber, 2010).

Leadership role of professional nurse includes innovation in problem solving, empowering patients in decision making, supporting other nurses, and active participation in decision-making in the unit. Leadership in nurse profession allows each staff members to achieve common goal. Conclusion There are different leadership roles in nursing profession including charge nurse, nurse educator, clinicians, and nurse managers. However, nursing profession requires leadership and management skills to all staff members cause they are the one advocating for patients and managing healthy work environment.

According to Huber (2010), leadership skill are taught and learned over time. New graduate nurses can influence their team by collaborating with others and participating making decision such as being innovated and being a member of shared governance.
