Leadership & Organizational Development

They persuade others to follow them or pursue goals they define. They control situations. They improve the performance of groups and organizations. They get results. ” (Leadership Communication Deborah J. Barrett page) The above definition clarifies that leaders not only lead but also motivate and inspire people. It also says that leaders are people who have a good command and control over people and situations. Leaders help conquer a perceived goal and achieve results. In other words, leaders are people who can create an environment where the hole team is comfortable in accepting the values and culture that he/she portrays.

Also a leader incorporates the team’s common goal and inspires them to follow the path towards the perceived goal. “Communication is the transmission of meaning from one person to another or to many people whether verbally or nonverbally. ” (Leadership Communication Communication is the process of understanding and delivering information. An individual is recognized and understood through how he/she communicates. An individual’s interpersonal skills are important as it portrays his personality and is capability in deciphering information and proving his point.

A successful leader has to be able to prove his/her point and be able to inspire people in order to have followers. A successful leader is charismatic and inspiring and that is possible only when he/she is able to successfully communicate to his followers and motivate them towards achieving their goals. A successful leader does not only emphasize on his personal growth but also focuses on individual follower growth which requires proper communication. A leader inspires trust through effective communication. The following diagram shows the process of communication; (http://www. Crib. Com/doc/19229550/A-Model-Of-The-Communication-P recess) The figure above shows the process of communication, which includes the sender and the receiver. The sender has a thought process which is encoded and then sent to the receiver through various channels/media. This message may be distorted through noise. Noise can be complicated medium, long channels, technical problems and many more. The receiver, after receiving the message decodes and understands the message as was sent and then provides feedback to the sender.

The process above shows clearly that a leader needs to understand what message he/she is conveying and how the receiver decodes the message; also he/she has to listen to the feedback provided as the process of communication is incomplete without feedback. A successful leader has to be a strategic communicator. Being able to strategically plan his communication technique he/she has to maintain dialogue and also consider the environment he is using (channels and noise). He/she has to listen to the feedback provided and be able to decode the feedback accordingly to apply them to achieving objectives.

The communication process should be purpose directed they should stimulate the mission vision and values of the leader and his/her followers. The leader should be able to use different channels and media that reinforce the effectiveness of the communicated information. Communication and leadership are destined to be together as no leader could succeed without good communication. If we look back at all great leaders we can see that they have shown charisma and inspiration through their ability to communicate their mission and vision. The Martin Luther King Jar. Beech, “I Have a Dream” incorporated his vision for the future of African Americans. It created one common thought amongst all African Americans. Martin Luther King Jar. Create a revolution through his speech; which shows the importance of communication in successful leadership. “l have a dream that my four little children will one d live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by t content of their character. ” (Martin Luther King Jar. I Have a Dream speech) A communicator may not be a leader but a leader has to be a communicator.

Leadership cannot succeed without him/her being able to communicate to is followers. Although Chew Guava, the famous Cuban leader rose to power through his communication and his ability to portray what future he saw for t nation failed later because of his lack of understanding what the people want from him. He failed to make his followers understand what he envisioned and that ultimately saw his downfall as a leader. A good leader and communicator lead by example, they are able to show what they desire for the betterment of the team, the organization or the institution as a whole and are able to paint a picture of what the future holds.

This inspires followers to follow his/her lead and helps them understand the leadership they are following. Therefore a lea cannot be successful without good communication. 2. As the world continues to shrink and businesses become increasingly multicultural, how does a leader embrace diversity in their customers, work and organizational leadership? (30 Points) To be a successful leader in a diverse workplace, the leader has to incorporate interactive leadership. Interactive Leadership is a leadership style in which people develop personal relationships with followers, share power and information, empowers employ ND strives to enhance others’ feelings of self-worth. ” (The Leadership Expire 4th edition Richard L Daft) Business today does not have boundaries. Globalization is the growing trend and many organizations have grown beyond geographical boundaries. Diverse today not only means working with people with different skill sets and differed personal values and morals it also means that there is cultural and integration diversity at a particular organization.

A good leader has to be able to understand this diversity and manage the difference in opinions and the difference in work culture to develop a better irking environment and use this diversity to better achieve strategic goals. Understanding diversity requires understanding the different social value systems. People from different cultures approach things differently and perceive things differently. A good leader needs to understand that and be able to Provo individual working space. Leaders need to embrace diversity in different stages. They need to learn that variety in workforce is beneficial rather than disadvantageous. Understand the rules and regulations that govern diversity at the workforce. Abide by the EYE and DAD laws that protect minority groups and their rights. Understand different cultures and their value systems by research. Leaders nee to know what is acceptable in different cultures and what the moral obligations of their culture/religion are. Understand the meaning of personal growth and development of each individual in the workplace. Use variety in culture as an advantage and weapon against competition. Leaders should be able to manage internal unity in the workplace that embraces diversity and avoids conflicts. Leaders should provide diversity awareness training. Globalization has introduced business to a diverse market so a diverse company would have an advantage as it would have knowledge of different cultures, on the other hand, non diverse organizational structure would lack the knowledge of cultural diversity. For e. G. It would be easier to communicate and relate to a person of the same culture than to interact with people from a different culture People from different cultures bring more ideas and experience than an identity group of people.

In contrast, diversity has its downsides such as; Language barriers Cultural clashes Ethical differences Morals and values Prejudice Leaders need to overcome these obstacles to successfully achieve their Strata objectives and maintain a healthy working environment. 3. Successful leadership involves a blend of power and influence. Please dish the interrelatedness of these leadership characteristics and indicate how you assert the use of personal power and influence given your personal skill sets personality. 30 Points) Power – “The ability of one person or department in an organization to influent other people to bring about desired outcomes. ” Influence – ‘The effects a person’s actions have on the attitudes, values, belie or actions of others. ” In other words, Power is the authority to command others to carry out the objectives that you set forth. Influence on the other hand is the effect you have on people’s attitude and behavior through your actions. Power and Influence are two different phenomena interrelated to each other. Successful leaders exhibit both power and influence.

They have authority to direct, command and order and also have the ability to motivate and persuade their followers. Therefore power and influence go hand in hand. The manager as the authority to direct and control his subordinates but if he doesn’t have influence over them the power is ineffective. Organizations today strive for democratic leadership, leaders who give equal importance to his/her followers and to the task at hand, leaders who delegate authority and focus on providing opportunity and personal growth of his employees, a leader who is sensitive towards the needs of his subordinates and respects their ideas and feelings.

An employee centered leader who understand the employees’ needs of self actualization. According to Harry Truman, “Leadership is the ability to get men to do what hey don’t want to do and like it. ” Leaders acquire power and authority and give it importance as they believe it affects career progress, job performance and organizational development. Rather organizations today have more importance towards influence and motivation. Power or authority cannot be unilateral; it cannot be one dimensional because every individual has self esteem and a sense of power over things.

Direct demanding authority would have repercussions and employees would rather retaliate negatively towards that kind of leadership. When a leader is able to influence his followers and motivate them towards a common objective it is moor effective. There is greater interdependence between leaders and followers in an organization today. Influence and persuasion along with the authority and pop holds more validity and strength than autocratic leadership. I believe in democratic leadership where every individual is involved in the decision making process.

Transforming power and authority into influence and persuasion is effective and efficient in organizations today. Communication, interpersonal skills, understanding and delegation are important characteristics hat reflect my personality and I believe that these characteristics help in inspiring and driving people towards the same goal.
